Dubai Municipality Deploys Smart Robot for Geospatial Surveying

Dubai Municipality has deployed a smart geospatial surveying robot using LiDAR and advanced imaging technology, reducing operating costs by 90% and significantly accelerating survey processes in a residential project.

Dubai Municipality has deployed a smart robot to carry out geospatial surveying operations as part of its wider programme to modernise field services and strengthen the emirate’s digital spatial-data infrastructure.

The robot uses technologies including LiDAR and smart cameras to collect spatial information rapidly and accurately with limited human intervention. The system can generate high-precision coordinates, panoramic imagery, video and three-dimensional point clouds, providing detailed digital information that can support infrastructure development, asset management, urban planning and government decision-making.

90% reduction in operating costs

The technology has already been deployed at the Wadi Al Amardi Housing Project for UAE nationals, where it was used to carry out final surveys of completed buildings and support the issuance of final survey certificates.

According to Dubai Municipality, the deployment resulted in a 90% reduction in operating costs. The Municipality also reported a cumulative reduction of 472 days in customer waiting time across the project, together with savings equivalent to 24 days of fieldwork and 40 hours of office work.

These figures illustrate how automation can affect not only field operations but also the wider customer journey associated with government surveying and certification procedures.

From 2D surveys to detailed 3D information

The robotic system expands surveying output beyond traditional two-dimensional data. It can create detailed three-dimensional models and datasets covering building façades and other physical assets, increasing the amount of information available for engineering, planning and future geospatial applications.

The technology can also improve occupational safety by reducing the need for survey personnel to enter locations that may be difficult or unsafe to access.

Dubai Municipality said it intends to expand the use of the technology across residential community projects and integrate robotic surveying further into its field operations.

Part of Dubai’s wider digital transformation

The initiative forms part of a broader move towards highly integrated geospatial information and digital urban management.

Earlier in 2026, Dubai launched its Digital Twin Platform, which incorporates data covering infrastructure, buildings, facilities, master plans and residential units. The platform now includes more than 1,500 geospatial data layers and hundreds of thousands of three-dimensional infrastructure and public-asset models.

Advanced surveying technology therefore supports a wider digital ecosystem in which reliable and continuously updated spatial data can be used to improve planning, infrastructure management and government-service delivery.

NUR Advisory Note

The introduction of robotic surveying is a useful example of how Dubai’s digital transformation is increasingly affecting the practical delivery of government services.

For developers, engineering firms, contractors, property owners and businesses involved in construction or infrastructure projects, faster and more accurate surveying processes can ultimately contribute to shorter administrative timelines and more efficient project completion procedures.

Companies operating in these sectors should continue to monitor changes to Dubai Municipality’s digital platforms and surveying processes, particularly where government certificates, building completion procedures or spatial-data requirements form part of their operations.

The development also reinforces a broader trend in the UAE. Government digitalisation is increasingly moving beyond online applications and document processing into the automation of the underlying technical work itself.
